Dr. Perry's series will be on the topic ‘The Living Sea Scrolls’: New Histories of Jewish Life in the Middle Ages.

  • November 4th – The Passover Story Turned Upside Down: Slavery in Jewish Households
  • November 18th – Real Jewish Housewives of Medieval Cairo
  • December 2nd – Rabbis, Heretics, and the Politics of Being Jewish

Over the last century, our knowledge of medieval Jewish history has been revolutionized by a stunning discovery. This discovery was a cache of nearly 400,000 manuscripts and documents that accumulated in the attic of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo over the course of a millennium. This course will explore how these documents shed new light on Jewish life in during the time of Islamic empires, the Crusades, and the life of Moses Maimonides in Egypt. Participants will have the chance to read and discuss original writings from this collection that prompt us to ask new questions about the present-day and to imagine new possibilities for Jewish futures.
